The AACN and the international nurse council, defines the advanced practicing nurse

(APN) role as an individual who has obtained the advanced knowledge, training and education to

expand their clinical knowledge and role by earning an advanced degree in nursing. The

specification of their training and skills is what makes them differ from other registered nurses. If

focus and training is for the role of nurse practitioner, the national certification exam must be

taken after graduation. They must also obtain a special license issued by the state in which they

will practice. The role of the APN includes certified nurse practitioners (CNP), the certified nurse

midwife (CNM), the clinical nurse specialist (CNS), and the certified nurse anesthetist CNRNA).

(Denisco, Barker, 2015) The roles differ with each specialty of APN and the guidelines for APN

practice is different from state to state.

Certified Nurse Practitioner

Certified Nurse Practitioners (CNPs) are advanced practice registered nurses who provide

health care and disease process management. A nurse practitioner assesses the needs of the

patient, order lab test and interpret diagnostic studies. (Abel, L. (2018) CNPs also diagnose

illness and disease, they prescribe medications as well as formulate treatment plans. CNPs

provide care in a multiple settings, including but limited to primary care, schools, acute care

hospitals, or long-term care facilities. In most states, nurse practitioners are recognized as

independent providers and can prescribe medications and other necessary treatments for patients.

Training of the CNP includes basic disease prevention, care coordination, and health promotion.

According to the AANP, a nurse practitioner has graduate level education and must

complete a clinical requirement to provide the specialty care depending in their field of practice.
