⁃ Father was a sign painter and lettering artists
⁃ Sent to teacher training college aged 14, but continues to
study lettering
⁃ Studies at Leipzig in the academy for the Graphic Arts and the
Book Production Trade
⁃ Aged 17, accepted into the class of Prof. Hermann Delitsch -
calligraphy, engraving, wood-engraving
⁃ Studies renaissance writing masters: Palatino and Tagliente

⁃ From 1921-25 he was teaching and working as a freelance
designer
⁃ Title-face; 1923
⁃ Went to the first exhibition of the Bauhaus
⁃ He saw the work of designers and artists from the Bauhaus,
such as Nagy
⁃ Went on to meet many of the leading players in the modernist
movement; such as Manray
⁃ Became a disciple of the modernist movement
⁃ Became a vocal advocate of the movement; wrote key books
and articles
⁃ 1925; ‘typographic monthly’ magazine
