AEROBIC EXERCISE
Aerobic exercise is known as cardio exercise. During aerobic exercise the heart
is able to supply enough oxygen to the muscles. Aerobic exercise generally
includes low intensity and longer duration. Examples would include: walking,
jogging, hiking and dancing.
The oxygen is utilised by you heart and lungs to supply enough oxygen to your
blood creating oxygenated blood. Aerobic exercise is the process which your
body utilisers oxygen and glucose. Aerobic exercise requires aerobic
respiration to produce energy. The equation for aerobic respiration is:
Oxygen+ glucosewater+ carbon dioxide.
We breath oxygen from the air around us and we get glycogen from the food
we eat, the glycogen will then turn into glucose and provide us with energy.
The energy will fuel our exercise and make us perform better. When we breath
out we create waste products such as carbon dioxide and water.
There are lots of benefits of aerobic exercise such as increased muscle
stamina/ cardio vascular endurance. Having a good stamina is important
because it allows you exercise for a long time improving your performance, it
also lowers your blood pressure. Another reason why having a good cardio
vascular endurance is that the swimmer can maintain the quality of their
performance throughout their training/competition. This would be good for a
swimmer as their intensity or swimming should be the same at 10 meters into
the race and at 100 metres. Having low blood pressure (not too low) is good
for you as it decreases the chances of you having a stroke or heart disease.
Having a high tidal volume (increased lung capacity) is good because it means
the person doesn’t have to breath as often this means the athlete will not get
out of breath fast. Another benefit of doing aerobic exercise is that your heart
strengthens (cardiac hypertrophy). It also increases the persons red blood cell
count which is good because they carry oxygen. Having lots of oxygen when
exercising is good because you won get out of breath quickly. This would
benefit a swimmer as they can hold their breath in the water and not get tired.
, ANAEROBIC EXERCISE
Anaerobic exercise is high intensity but only lasts for a short period of time. For
example, a swimmer might use up all their energy and the beginning or the
race, if they do the swimmer would not be able to swim at a high intensity
during the performance. The reason high intensity only lasts for a short
duration is because your heart is unable to supply oxygenated blood quickly
enough. Because the heart is not able to supply enough oxygen the body
depends on glucose. Anaerobic exercise creates an oxygen debt which means
your body runs out of oxygen, therefore your breath faster and harder to catch
back the oxygen you lost around your body. During anaerobic exercise the
heart is not able to supply oxygen to the muscles quickly enough. This means
the athlete will have to continue exercising without oxygen. Some examples of
anaerobic training include weight lifting, sprinting and interval training.
Benefits of anaerobic exercise include stronger bones, reduced atrophy with
age (strong muscles), increased speed at power, increased muscle strength
mass and it improves muscle tone. This links to a swimmer because a swimmer
may swim a fast for one lap then they may not be able to do this again for
