Core competencies differentiate a firm strategically with more than technology. Core
competency is values, abilities, and skills that distinguish an organization from the other.
Competencies often combine different kinds of abilities, such as abilities in managing the
market, building and maintaining an adequate infrastructure, and technological skills. Core
competencies are difficult to imitate. A firm’s core competencies depend on building high-quality
relationships across different functions and business units. The mechanisms by which
individuals acquire it or tap it are poorly understood. Once a firm has established a baseline
internal analysis, it can move on to identifying its core competencies and formulate its strategic
intent. A company must have the ability for technological management when it comes to applied
science, process design, and manufacturing. A company that excels at the combination of this
will have a core competence which would make it difficult to duplicate, and that will give the
firm a strategic advantage.
