WEEK 6: THE NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
Consider a group project that you worked on at work or school. Did your group use mostly
sequential or parallel processes? Why? What with the advantages and disadvantages of that
approach?
Students should provide examples from their own experience. An example that came up
previously follows: “In developing a loan disbursement process in a post-conflict emerging
market we used a parallel process. While creating the means by which loans would be disbursed
we identified the need for additional products (letters of credit) that would be required to carry
out the disbursements. Similar to ensuring a product can be manufactured we had to determine
the likelihood that the additional products could be put in place to support the overall
disbursement process.”
We use sequential and parallel processes in projects. You should not complete some activities
before completion of any other operation; because you should arrange these actions in series.
While other activities can be parallel, a perfect example would be if a project involving new
product development. The project activities should be organized in sequences such as idea
generation, developing a prototype, testing before launching into the market, manufacturing,
packaging, and distribution. Other action like advertisement and promotions can be carried
simultaneously with manufacturing stages.
