Class Length: 10 weeks
For every 1 hour in a theory class, it is expected that students complete 2–3 hours of study in preparation for class. For
this course, it is expected that a minimum of 10–15 hours of study outside of class is completed each week. Please

Description
This course is the second in the series of courses focusing on the concepts of medical–surgical nursing. This course
provides knowledge for nursing of older adults with complex acute health problems focusing on maintaining or
restoring health of acutely ill clients. The needs of older adults returning to the community and community health care
issues will be addressed.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Develop the nursing process to illustrate the exceptional care of adults as they age and alter their health.
2. Plan care for older adults and those with alterations in health using additional applicable concepts: perfusion,
oxygenation, intracranial regulation, fluid regulation, infection/inflammation, tissue integrity, pain, metabolism,
nutrition, elimination, mobility, safety, collaboration, and health promotion.
3. Distinguish the interprofessional collaboration/team management needs of older adults and those with alterations in
