4. Plot of the book
The story starts in the late 1700s when Simon Arthur Henry Fitzranulph Basset,
Earl of Clyvedon, was finally born after his mother had had fifteen years of
miscarriages and stillborns. The duchess, however, dies from childbirth
complications leaving the current Duke of Hastings no choice but to leave his
newly born son in the care of his nurse so that he can see to business in other
places. He visits his son two years later, he is dismayed that Simon cannot yet
speak but the nurse tries to calm him down by informing the Duke, Simon is very
good at writing, but it does not good. The duke comes back two years later, and
the child is now able to speak but he has a stutter. In fury, the duke calls his son
as idiot and attempts to “hit the words out of him” but Simon, with his stutter, tells
him no. After 7 years of hard practice and many speaking and breathing
techniques, Simon visits his father in London in an attempt to show him he is the
son he always wanted but it doesn’t go as planned and the duke rejects him
again. Simon vows to be the exact opposite of his father when he is older.
The story then meets us in April 1813. Daphne Bridgerton is the eldest daughter
of the Bridgerton family and is looking for a suitable husband – for two years
already. Her family has a tradition of naming their children in alphabetical order
and she has 7 siblings, the eldest being Anthony Bridgerton, who is the head of
, the house as their father had passed away many years ago and he is now
responsible for finding suitable husbands for his younger sisters.
Daphne has the dream to have many kids one day and to marry for love instead
of convenience but feels as though most men see her as a kind friend and not a
potential life partner. While attending a ball, she is approached by a man whose
marriage proposal she has rejected twice and when he refuses to leave her
alone, she strikes him only to find out the new Duke of Hastings had been
watching the entire interaction and attempts to help her solve her problem without
getting anyone else involved. Simon deducts that Daphne is his long-time friend,
Anthony’s, younger sister and she admits she has heard of wild reputation.
Returning to the ball, they dance together and as the conversation continues to
develop, they speak about deep and meaning life aspects such as children and
marriage. Daphne reveals her life plans but is shocked to learn of Simon’s – he
will never marry and never have children. Simon, after hearing of Daphne’s
problems, suggests they fake a courtship in which Daphne will seem desirable to
suitors and Simon will be left alone by the mothers of the ton. They both agree to
the plan but are later confronted by Anthony and are forced to let him in on their
ruse. He reluctantly agrees on the condition that they are never left alone as he
fears for his sister’s reputation – if she is ruined, she will never find a suitable
husband or a husband at all.
As Daphne and Simons “courtship” continues, they begin to develop deep and
heart aching feelings for one another knowing they can never act on them. At a
ball, Daphne and Simon are met by a man who has letters from his late father
and wishes to give them to him. take a walk in the gardens where they share a
passionate and fire enticing kiss but are caught by Anthony who forces Simon to
marry Daphne and when he refuses Anthony challenges him to a duel. Daphne
feels uncertain about the fact that Simon would rather die than marry her but
Simon informs him that if they were to marry it would destroy her dreams of
having a family. At home, Daphne seeks the help of the third oldest in the family,
Colin, to help her to stop the duel as he had informed her someone had seen
them going into the gardens unsupervised and Daphne fears for her reputation.
Colin and Daphne rush to stop the duel and she informs Simon that if he doesn’t
marry her, her reputation will be ruined. He agrees to marry her but informs her
that he cannot have children. She agrees to marry him anyway.
