Activity 1
The type of project I worked on with my cousin that works as an educator was a
sanitary pad campaign. The goal was to accumulate enough sanitary pads or money
to buy them and thus provide girls at schools in my community with sanitary pads.
The community I lived in had a high rate of unemployment so being able to provide
something essential to girls within my community was something that had a
significant impact on my life as well as the girls involved with the project. The project
entailed asking for donations at shopping centres and social media platforms. We
asked individuals to either donate money or sanitary pads itself. We also contacted
the principals in order to get a total number of girls attending the different schools as
a means of working towards that number so that we could provide every girl at a
school with sanitary pads instead of coming up short. We delivered the feminine
product to the schools at the end of the month.
The resources I needed to get this project up and running was money, time, a
vehicle, motivation and passion. Money was the most important resource since I
couldn’t buy the product without it. This required me to go out and explain what the
campaign consisted of while simultaneously asking for donations at various
organizations. The objective with my time was to create the most efficient schedule
possible while also maximizing the use of the resources available.
I needed a vehicle and a driver to drive me around as I did not have a driver’s
license. I needed to go to various organizations which were not in walking distance
as well as drive to schools to deliver the donations received. Having passion,
motivation and drive is very important for a campaign like this because it means
being interested in community issues and wanting to make positive changes in your
own community while also helping others.
