FEEDBACK – ASSIGNMENT 25
PROJECT 4805
Please note that we did not mark absolutely strictly according to the memorandum below.
Lecturers used their discretion and expertise to mark your answers. Not all possible answers
are reflected in this memorandum.
You assignments were marked in a fair and just way by our markers. Please use this
memorandum as a learning opportunity and not to query your marks because you think your
answer is better. If you passed this assignment, please accept your mark and do not contact us
to negotiate a better mark. If you failed this assignment, please study the feedback carefully –
you will need it for the final report writing. Generally, you did very well in this assignment.
We hope that you will also enjoy doing Assignment 26.
Answers in Terre Blanche et al. (2006) and/or Project 4805 guidelines or ANY OTHER
RELEVANT RESEARCH SOURCE.
Activity 1:
Provide 6 characteristics of (or ‘rules’ for) a good title for a research article or a research
report. (Terre Blanche et al. (2006), p. 122)
1. Convey the gist of the article.
2. Short (5 to 10 words). (For M and D students at Unisa the rule is that a title should be no
longer than 15 words.)
3. Leave out words like: a study, investigate, research etc
4. Reflect main idea or focus of article – not too short to obscure meaning
5. Short catchy phrase might be used with more detailed title after.
6. Any other relevant answer [6]
Activity 2:
The following title does not comply with the rules for a good title: ‘Morals down the drain? A
research study investigating the relationship between different variables of moral
development in South African adolescent boys and girls between 12 and 18 years of age’.
Correct this title by providing a better title which complies with the rules for a good title.
, Any title that conveys the principles in Activity 1. The shorter the better. A good example
is: “Determinants of moral development in South African adolescents”, or with a short catchy
title before the main title. But no vague terms like “different variables”; not the ages; not the
sexes; South African can be part of the title or not. Not words like “research study”,
“investigating”, “investigation” etc. [5]
Activity 3:
Provide a provisional title for your research project. (You will probably change the title a
couple of times – a normal process as your knowledge and understanding increases). [5]
Any suitable title relevant to your research. The main issues covered in the questionnaire (and
literature) are: Identity development, Moral development, parental influence, and off course
adolescence. These issues should off course be reflected but in such a way that the reader
knows exactly what you intend to do in your study. Do not use vague titles like: “Moral
development in adolescence.” The reader might ask: “What about moral development during
adolescence?” A title like: “Variables influencing moral development” is also too vague and
you will lose some marks for a vague title.
Notes to marker: If a title is vague but workable, like the latter one above, give 3 marks out of
5)
Activity 4:
Complete the following sentences: (Terre Blanche et al. (2006), p. 123 or any other relevant
research source) [10]
An abstract is a summary of the main points made in the article (and is typically 200 words in
length). / Provides an overview of the study to the reader. (4 marks)
An abstract should answer three main questions, namely: (1 mark for each answer)
(a) Why? - Why the study was conducted
(b) How? – How the study was conducted
