In een energiebron is een soort energie opgeslagen die door een energie-omzetter
gebruikt kan worden.
Soorten energiebronnen
Fossiele brandstoffen
Fossiele brandstoffen zoals aardolie, aardgas en steenkool leveren chemische
energie.
Biomassa
Biomassa is een materiaal dat van planten en dieren afkomstig is.
Wind
Wind wordt steeds belangrijker als energiebron. De wieken van zo’n windmolen
of windturbine drijven een generator aan die in de molen is ingebouwd. Op die
manier wordt de bewegingsenergie van wind omgezet in elektrische energie.
Atoomsplijting
Sommige atoomkernen, zoals die van uranium, kunnen worden gespleten. Bij
het splijten
van zo'n atoomkern komt veel energie in de vorm van warmte vrij. In een
kerncentrale
wordt die warmte gebruikt om stoom te maken. De stoom spuit met grote
snelheid tegen
de schoepen van een turbine die aan een generator is gekoppeld. Deze
generator zet die
bewegingsenergie om in elektrische energie.
Zon
De zon is een vorm van stralingsenergie. Die stralingsenergie kan door een
zonnecel (zonnepaneel) worden omgezet in elektrische energie.
Aardwarmte
Het is mogelijk om warmte die afkomstig is uit
diepe aardlagen naar het oppervlak te halen.
