QUESTION 1
The School Governing Body (SGB) and the School Management Team (SMT) of your school are doing
strategic planning for the next five years to bring about significant improvement in the school’s
performance in academic, cultural and sporting achievements at all levels.
You are tasked by your principal to give an account of how people-centred school approaches to school
development can be used as a framework for school development over the next five years.
Write an academic essay in which you explore approaches towards making the school more
‘people-centred’.
Your essay should address the following three matters:
- In recent years the context of schools has changed, and this resulted in a need for a change in
the management of schools. Discuss this in terms of schools in general terms and in terms of
your own experience in this regard.
- Discuss the major characteristics of a people-centred approach to managing a school. Your
discussion should refer to at least three authors’ views, constructs, theories or approaches
which are contained in the readings you have studied for this module in this regard.
- Discuss how schools can be made more people-centred over the next five years. Refer to
practical issues here, also taken from what you have personally learnt in this module and apply
these to your school’s context. [25]
QUESTION 2
Write an academic essay in which you discuss and explain the importance of mentoring and
mentorship in education.
Your essay should address the following aspects of mentoring:
- Discuss the characteristics of the ideal mentor in an educational context; referring specifically to
the needs in your own teaching situation.
- There are eight categories of ways for helping in the mentoring process. Discuss any four of
these categories and explain why it would be useful in your situation.
- The selection and training of mentor teachers are of utmost importance. Address both these
issues and explain what you would like from your mentor if you are a student or junior teacher.
- Discuss the benefits of mentoring that you anticipate for yourself as a mentor teacher.
