Assignment 3: Reporting and recording accidents
and incidents

, Task 1
Explain the principles behind the reporting of accidents, incidents and near misses. Describe why it is
important that engineering organisations have (and adhere to) a health and safety reporting system.
Note: This activity is about whether you are able to relate to the importance of follow-up actions
after accidents and incidents. For this grade you should outline the general principles that inform
actions.
The Reporting of injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulation 1995(RIDDOR). This
regulation is in place so that can prevent the same injury from happening more than once in the
distant feature. It does this by ensuring that all injuries that occur get reported so then company can
do something to prevent it from happening again. This is the importance to adhere those regulations
so we can prevent death, injuries and make our company’s reputation famous for our guidelines and
that we care for our colleagues like a family.
RIDDOR is also used to report any piece of equipment that can be dangerous such as sharp edges or
excessive heat produced. Once a hazard has been found, a report must be sent to a local Health and
Safety Executive department when an accident occurs. Failure to do it can have a huge effect on the
workplace. The government has the power to shut down the company, health, and safety risk
prosecution, may lose staff and increase costs.
Accidents cost money. Some of these costs are obvious like lost wages, medical treatment, damage
to the equipment. Other costs including legal penalties, difficulty of recruiting new members and it
will other affects like staff morale and more people would like to leave from this ‘death trap’
