In After, Tessa Young, an innocent and naive girl, goes to
college in Washington. Her roommate Steph is the
opposite of Tessa, much to the horror of her mother and
her boyfriend Noah: she wears daring clothes, has dyed
red hair and many tattoos and piercings. She also meets
the British Hardin, a friend of Steph, who immediately acts
unkind and arrogant to her. Although he doesn't look like
Noah at all with his tattoos and piercings, she finds him
very attractive. Tessa befriends Landon, who turns out to
be Hardin's stepbrother: Hardin's father and Landon's
mother are getting married soon.
With Steph, Tessa goes to some parties, where she
drinks, plays Truth or Dare with Steph's group of friends
and admits to being a virgin. To her own surprise, Tessa kisses Hardin at a party, after
which Hardin again acts very distant and unkind. Although Tessa is in a relationship with
Noah, she can't resist Hardin. They argue, then decide to be friends, but can't resist the
sexual tension. At a lake, Hardin gives Tessa her first orgasm, a special moment. She is
therefore very sad when Hardin then says that he does not want to date and does not want a
relationship. That same night, Noah stays overnight, but Landon calls Tessa at night to help
him calm down the drunken Hardin. Tessa ends up in bed with Hardin. Noah finds out she's
been unfaithful, but gives her a second chance. Still, Tessa can't resist the temptation and
her affair with Hardin continues. When Hardin says he needs her and wants to date her, she
breaks up with Noah. Tessa makes Hardin want to spend more time with his university
principal, Ken. Ken was not a good father in the past and therefore does not have a good
relationship with his son. He makes sure that Tessa gets an internship at publishing house
Vance Publishing, if she manages to convince Hardin to come to the wedding. The
relationship between Tessa and Hardin has the same ups and downs as before: they argue
and then make amends. Tessa is very jealous of Molly, a friend of Hardin's with whom he
used to have sex. When Tessa sees Hardin at a party with Molly, she kisses Hardin's friend
Zed to make him jealous. Hardin kisses Molly in response, after which Tessa decides to go
on a date with Zed. Hardin then declares love to Tessa, but when Tessa rejects him, he
takes the words back. Eventually, they tell each other around the campfire that they love
each other and their relationship seems to be heading in the right direction. Tessa's mom
goes to campus and threatens to stop paying for her room on campus if she keeps seeing
Hardin. That evening, Hardin and Tessa have sex for the first time, resulting in bloodied
sheets. Hardin wants Tessa to live with him in an apartment so that she can become
independent from her mother. On the first night in their new apartment, Hardin doesn't come
home. When she finds him drunk and when it turns out that he has fought, he refuses to tell
