Learning aim C: Carry out work experience tasks to meet set objectives
Assessment criteria
C.P5 Demonstrate work-related skills to meet set objectives for work experience tasks.
C.P6 Discuss ways in which work shadowing and observation can support development of own skills while on work placement.
C.M3 Demonstrate work-related skills with confidence and proficiency to meet objectives in different situations.
C.D2 Demonstrate work-related skills proficiently, taking the initiative to carry out activities according to own responsibilities and
setting’s procedures and selecting appropriate skills and techniques for different situations.
Task 1 - during my work experience placement I carried out a task of serving food and drink to the
residents within the residential care home. To do this there was several thongs that I had to do,
consider, and uphold to do this safely and at the best of my ability.
What skills, behaviours and attributes did I demonstrate while carrying out this task?
P5:
During this task I had to display numerous skills, behaviours, and attributes to carry out this task to
the best of my ability as well as ensuring safety. for example, the skills that I would have to
demonstrate are communication skills and patience. I would have to display communication skills
because I was actively talking to the service users to ask them what their likes, dislikes, and
preferences are. I also displayed effective communication skills when completing this task of
serving food through talking to my colleagues as well as the residents to understand if they have
any dietary needs or preferences. During this I also displayed patience. This is because some
residents may take longer to decide on what food or drink, they would like. So, I ensured that I
waited for their response or repeated the question if they needed or asked me to.
During this task, I also displayed friendliness, professionalism, and politeness. Friendliness and
politeness would be important to display during this because I was actively communicating with
residents and asking them questions. If I wasn’t friendly, then they may not feel comfortable talking
or answering my questions. Professionalism is also important because it will ensure that I am
following the policies and procedures are set out in relation to this specific task.
M3 & D2:
There were several things that I had to consider while completing this task that were my
responsibilities, such as, allergies, dietary needs, coronavirus, legislation, policies, and procedures.
As well as displaying the skills, behaviours, and attributes that are communication friendliness,
professionalism, politeness, and patience. I would need to consider allergies when serving food to
ensure that I don’t cause the resident ill-health. Allergies can cause mild or severe reactions that
can have a serious impact on health and wellbeing. As shown by Mayo clinic (2021), The most
common food allergy signs and symptoms include: Tingling or itching in the mouth. Hives, itching or
eczema. Swelling of the lips, face, tongue and throat or other parts of the body. By ensuring that
,you can uphold a resident’s allergens it will also ensure that you are upholding the human rights
legislation, by not putting the service user at harm’s way. I also had to consider other dietary needs.
for example, a resident that I was serving food to have a dietary requirement of thickener in their
drinks. Thickened fluids are easier to swallow as they enter the pharynx slowly, allowing time for
the pathway to the lungs to be closed off to avoid aspiration and choking (Nursing times 2014). By
upholding the resident’s specific dietary requirements, it would mean that you are ensuring that
you are promoting safe and equal practice to that resident. If the resident had coronavirus, the
procedures that I would take would have to differ from other residents to ensure safe practice. For
example, I would have to ensure that I wear full PPE when entering their room, as well as maintain
a safe distance where possible and wash my hand upon existing the room. This is so I can prevent
myself from coronavirus as well as putting other individuals at risk within the setting. There would
also be several legislations that I would have to consider while completing this task, for example,
the food hygiene legislation. For example, it states that Under the Food Safety Act 1990 and the
General Food Law Regulation 178/2002 you are responsible for ensuring that the food customers
eat is safe and the quality is what they expect (Visit Britain 2018). Lastly, I would also have to
ensure that I was upholding the settings policies and procedures, such as, wearing PPE. The
Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 2022 amend the 1992 Regulations to extend
employers' and employees' duties in respect of PPE to a wider group of workers (HSE GOV 2022).
This would be upholding policies and procedures because it would ensure that I am actively
upholding and promoting safe practice through the policies and procedures that are set out for my
work experience placement setting. Through using the behaviours, skills, and attributes of
friendliness, professionalism, politeness, communication skills, and patience it would be an
advantage because it ensured that I was able to complete the task to the best of my ability, using
wider knowledge. It would be a disadvantage to not use these because it can have numerous
consequences. For example, it could put service users at risk, it wouldn’t be professional, and it
won’t allow me the chance to identify what needs to change for the next time I repeat the task.
Through considering all these things when completing this task, it would be an advantage because
it will ensure that the resident feels comfortable, and the safety of the resident is ensured. This
would be an advantage because it will ensure that you are upholding professionalism by using
effective communication as well as using and upholding the relevant policies, procedures, and
legislations. It would be a disadvantage to not uphold and put these responsibilities/considerations
into place because it would mean that you are giving malpractice by not ensuring the safety of the
resident. It would be a breach of multiple policies, procedures, as well as legislation.
What feedback did I receive?
After completing this task, I received some feedback from my placement supervisor that can help
me to reflect and improve on the task within the future. Such as, to improve my communication
skills to ensure that I can communicate better with residents, staff, and my supervisor. This
feedback will allow me to identify the different ways that I can improve my practice to
communicate with others better. For example, it may mean that to be able to promote effective
communication I need to slow down my pace or change my tone for different individuals. It could
also suggest that I may need to learn the basics in British Sign language to be able to communicate
with service users who are hard of hearing. I also received feedback that I did the task safely and
efficiently. From this I can identify that I should use these same methods that I used during this task
again to ensure that I am able to repeat the task with the same efficiency and still uphold and
promote safe practice.
What went well?
, My objective for this task was to be able to serve food and drink effectively and safely to all of the
residents within my work experience placement. I believe that I was able to meet my objective for
several reasons because there are multiple things that went well during the performance of this
task, for example, I was able to uphold legislation, policies, and procedures, met dietary
requirement, and disposed of and wore the correct Personal protective equipment (PPE). I was able
to follow legislation, policies, and procedures during this task because I ensured that I familiarised
myself to relevant ones before beginning my work experience placement, this meant that I was
already familiar with them. I did this by ensured that I washed my hands, wore gloves, and apron
upon entering the kitchen and when serving the food and drink to the residents within my
placement. Another thing that went well during this task was that I was able to dispose of said PPE
in the correct places within the Sluice. This is important because if I were to dispose of it into the
wrong place or even into the wrong bins, then it could put other people at risk, especially if a
resident that I encountered had corona virus. I also believe that I was able to meet my objective of
safely and effectively serving food and drink to the residents because I was able to effectively meet
all the dietary requirements, needs, and preferences of the different service users. I was able to do
this through communicating with members of staff, residents, as well as looking at the service users
file if I was made aware that they had extra needs regarding food or drink by another member of
staff, also by asking staff questions regarding different needs surrounding each service user.
Which factors may have influenced my performance?
There are several things that could have influenced my performance during this task, such as,
confidence, personal issues, as well as wider knowledge. Confidence can affect my performance
during this task because it can have a massive impact on my behaviour and communication. This is
because if I am not confident talking to different people, I will not be able to ensure that I am able
to meet and uphold the different dietary requirements, allergies, and preferences of the residents
within the setting. It can also have an impact on asking for help from a colleague. If I am not
confident to ask for help if I were to be unsure or struggle during this task it can influence my
performance due to being unsure during specific circumstances or situations. Personal issues can
also have a massive impact on my performance when completing this task. For example, if I were to
be in a negative mindset because of specific situation, this could possibly reflect onto my practice
within my work experience placement. This can become an issue that could influence my
performance because if I am the negative mindset manifests into a negative attitude it may make
service users or even other staff members uncomfortable. This means that if I am serving food and
drink to a service user and they feel as though they can’t tell me their needs and preferences, I will
not be performing to the best of my ability. Wider knowledge can also have an impact on my
performance during this task for several reasons. For example, if I am unaware of the different
legislations regarding food safety and food hygiene, it can affect the safety of the task. This is
because if I don’t have any knowledge regarding the relevant legislations, I won’t be able to ensure
that I am upholding safe practice.
How did work shadowing or observing others complete the task help my performance?
P6:
There are several different ways that work shadowing or observing other complete tasks can help my
performance in these tasks. The ways in which shadowing was believed to have helped prepare students
was in providing a foundation knowledge of service user groups and legislation, giving knowledge of
assessment skills, processes and working with others and in linking theory and practice and policies and
practice (Core 2006). For this task work shadowing will give me the opportunity learn by observing and being
able to ask questions. This will help my performance in serving food and drink to service users because I will
