THE COURSE PLAN

Name of the Teacher Name of the Student Level of the
student
Jo Benn-Day Alberto Mozo Minguez Intermediate

Syllabus Type:
Mixture of Functional and Multi Syllabus

Course Aims:
By the end of the course, the student will be better able to improve their pronunciation,
listening and speaking / conversational skills and technical understanding of work related
language.

,Course Rationale: (700 – 1000 words)

Alberto is a 31-year-old, Spanish Male student who has previously learnt English at school
in his own country, using mainly a textbook based approach which he feels is not the right
approach for him to improve his speaking, pronunciation, reading and listening skills in the
forthcoming set of lessons taken in England. As Alberto has expressed a desire to be able
to use technical terms related to his occupation and the ability to converse more
competently and confidently in English it was decided to use both a mixture of Multi and
Functional syllabi.

The initial topic chosen for Lesson 1 was UK Life and Culture as Alberto is new in the UK
and therefore it was deemed a good idea for him to learn more about English Culture as
way to ease him into the syllabus. Lesson one contains, reading, listening and speaking
activities at different points and can be adapted to suit the learner should the pace need to
be quicker or slower. Lesson 2 was assembled to reflect some of Alberto’s technical
language in the workplace as one of the pieces was about Renault, the company he used to
work for in Spain, also one of the articles is about Electronic Vehicles which is quite a
Current Affairs topic and he has mentioned he likes current affairs in his needs analysis
questionnaire,
Lesson 3 brings in a conversational topic that may be discussed in a group with other
people as football is sometimes common ground whichever language is spoken and is also
of interest to Alberto.
Lessons 4 and 5 are beginning to consider the technical aspect of the engineering/
mathematics/ physics language that Alberto must now be aware of in English in order to
gain new employment in the UK or to gain promotion in Spain and of which he expressed
his ability and interest in.

As mentioned previously the skills and target language being studied are the areas that
Alberto expressed an interest in both content and skills wise, there a mixture of personal
and professional areas has been considered to try to maintain the student’s interest whilst
studying the course.

The structure of the course aims to take into consideration both Alberto’s personal and
professional areas of interest to ensure as interesting and suitably personal content as
possible. The use of videos, authentic articles, teacher conversations and suggested films
should enable a thorough immersion in the English language coupled with conversations he
may be involved with or have the opportunity to be invited to outside of both work and
learning situations.

The first five lessons were structured so that Alberto could have personal English first
followed by some technical language then returning to personal interest activities before
once more returning to technical or functional English trying to provide a rounded
approach to covering all his expressed learning needs

As Alberto has indicated that he wishes to be proficient in speaking, pronunciation,
listening and reading skills then the current resources and lesson structures support the
opportunity for him to practise each of these skills whilst also addressing some of the other

,areas he also identified, such as CV writing, presentation skills and completion of
homework as each lesson provides the chance to practice these skills throughout the
syllabus. The syllabus can of course be amended and adapted as and when the student
decides he is competent in specific areas or wishes more practice in others.
Alberto will find some of the Technical English difficult to get to grips with initially and
therefore alternative literature may be helpful to have in place to offer as a replacement or
substitution if an article is too difficult to comprehend or conversely too easy or simple.

The home work activities were chosen based on some of the interests he expressed on his
needs analysis questionnaire as he mentioned that he liked scary movies and was very good
at Maths and Physics.
