Dr. Sibel,

This week has been a very challenging week mentally and physically. Shortages at work have
led to an excessive number of hours worked and my fellow co-workers are now facing PPE
shortages. It is disheartening to hear that this shortage includes gloves because misconceptions
within the public have resulted in them being stolen from exam rooms and nurses’ workstations
on wheels. Having recently just left the ED department, my heart is with my co-workers who
have been so drastically affected. In my current position, our department has been drafted to
become part of a COVID-19 hotline for the general public in addition to our current workflow.
To say the least, this has been interesting and stressful, especially considering two of our clinical
nurse managers have left in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. My body and mind are feeling
the effects of this week. Today is finally my first day off work and I am hoping to buckle down
and get this week’s assignment done. I’m typically not one to procrastinate, but with the current
pandemic, I haven’t quite figured out how to adjust to extra shifts, family life, school life, and
even less sleep than normal. I just keep telling myself, I’m not the only one experiencing extra
stress during this time and plan to take it one day at a time. As much as I’m struggling with this, I
can only imagine those actually caring for and treating those diagnosed with COVID-19 in
addition to their other patients, as I am currently only screening the general public for the virus
via telephone and facilitating transfers for patients to facilities that offer higher levels of care. I
have been keeping my fellow classmates and America in general in my thoughts and prayers.
This is a very scary time, but has highlighted the importance of healthcare workers, including
nurses and nurse practitioners. I can only hope that the same individuals who are relying so
heavily on nurses now will remember their importance when it comes time to pass new bills and
legislation.
