Veel veranderd doorheen de jaren op geologisch, klimatologisch en biologisch vlak.
Geologische veranderingen op aarde
- klimaatverandering --> link met CO2-concentratie in de atmosfeer
- locatie van de kustlijn
- verschuiven van de continenten (bv. Supercontinent Pangaea, ontstaat ah einde vh Perm)
- gebergtevorming (Caledonisch, Hercynisch, Alpien)
- biosfeer: 5 massaextincties (= massaal verdwijnen van een groot aantal soorten)

- superpositie (onderste lagen zijn
ouder dan degene erboven)
- biologische evolutie

Men gebruikt hierbij het verval van radioactieve elementen.
Koolstof 14 methode, +/- 50 000 jaar, verhouding C-14/C-12 zegt iets over de
leeftijd.
