Zoals het woord al zegt, kun je aan het werkwoord zien in welke tijd de zin zich afspeelt. De uitgang van het
werkwoord (dus: waar het op eindigt) verandert, over het algemeen, om die tijd aan te geven.
De tijden kunnen onderverdeeld worden in 3 periodes:
• Present (tegenwoordige tijd)
• Past (verleden tijd) en
• Future (toekomende tijd)
Binnen deze 3 tijden kan dan weer een onderverdeling gemaakt worden tussen:
• Simple
• Continuous
• Perfect (voltooide tijd).
N.B. In dit overzicht zijn uitzonderingen en onregelmatige werkwoorden buiten beschouwing gelaten. Het is bedoeld als
hulpmiddel om snel te kunnen zien hoe het ook al weer in elkaar steekt!
