Visit to the British Museum
We are going to London with the second stage of our school doorstroomfinaliteit on an integrated-work-
period in which we will stay there for some days and do some projects with the different subjects and
classes that we have. For the subjects English and History, we decided to go to the British Museum. This
group consists of eighty pupils in the second year of the second stage so they will approximately be 16
years old. Half of the group is studying History in English via Content and Language Integrated Learning
(CLIL). This is the group that we will focus on in this assignment.

The project day
Two of the English teachers and one History teacher will take the CLIL pupils to the British Museum
where they will have 3 hours to complete a project. The project goes as follows. The pupils get divided
into groups of five pupils so we will have eight groups in total. We the teachers will explain everything to
the pupils about what they will be doing inside the museum, how they should behave, how long they
get, what materials they can use, and what learning objectives they should reach by the end of this
project day. These groups will each get an assignment (which we will discuss in detail further in this text)
where they must meet some learning objectives that we as teachers have set.

 Pupils can understand their subject (understanding)
 Pupils can conduct research (analysing)
 Pupils can follow and execute rules in a different language (understanding + applying)
 Pupils explain information they gained from their research to others (applying)
 Pupils can make a self-assessment (applying + creating)
 Pupils can distinguish between primary objectives and secondary objectives (analysing)
 The pupils can present their subject in a creative way (creating)
 Pupils can use a QR code to gain more information about their subject (analysing)

By the end of the three-hour project, the pupils will have learned more about their subject and would
have reached the learning objectives with the help of the teachers that will be guiding them every step
of the way to ensure that they are doing their assignments in the best way possible.

Learning activities
As stated before, the project day takes place in the British Museum in London. The pupils will be divided
into groups of five people leaving us with eight groups. They will be given the task to do some research
in this museum. On the upper floors, there are four rooms quite close together which hold a lot of
history that is also linked together. The rooms are the following: Greek and Roman life, Roman Empire,
Etruscan world and lastly Greeks in Italy. There will be two groups per room, each given a different
subject to become an expert in. We have chosen these rooms because of the ties in between the
subjects which will enable us to evaluate them on matters from the learning goals that each subject has
set.

They will be given one hour to find the information they need to be able to form an answer on their
subject. There will be four groups working on architecture and four groups on the domains that we use
in history classes, with a higher focus on the cultural aspect of their room.
