Types of written comms

Letter
A letter is a written message that can be either written, typed and printed, than sent from one
person to another in a sealed envelope. This can be formal or informal, however in this case
formal.
The origin of the letter that we know today came into play during the reign of queen Victoria in
1840, before this letters didn't even have envelopes or stamps.

How a public service use it (police)
• To inform a member of public of a fine
• Letter of employment
• Response letter
• Court summons

Advantages
• Can contain detailed information
• It's much cheaper and doesn't have to require any electronics
• Can include visual information
Disadvantages
• It can take a long time to deliver, between 1-5 days
• When the letter is sent it can easily be lost
• The security of the letter is not 100%, it can be easily opened and read by an unintended
person which is illegal.
• It could accidentally be sent to the wrong address


Memo
A memo is a very adaptable piece of communication, usually used within a business environment
and gives a brief written message or report from one person or department to another.
A memo wasn't a form of communication until the late 1870's and early 1880's, however it didn't
become a common form of communication until the 1920's because at that point it became
widespread and was very common.
