Two contrasting public service organisations that I can talk about can be the police and the army in
relation to their roles, their purpose, powers and responsibilities in a given scenario and how
similar and differently they do things.

Police
In the police, officers have a variety of responsibilities that they have a duty of carrying out on a
daily basis and all these responsibilities come with powers and they lead to a purpose of why they
are done.
The roles and responsibilities of a police officer are to maintain law and order, protect members of
the public and their property and prevent crime.
The main powers that are bestowed upon an officer is the power to be able to arrest anyone who
has committed and offence, is about to commit an offence as well as if they are in the act of
committing and offence.
They are also given the power to arrest if they are within suspicion of a person to be suspected to
have had an involvement in an offence.
The purpose of an officer to be given these powers, roles and responsibilities in the eye of the law
is to be able to maintain the law in local areas by protecting the people that live around them and
their property from any attempts of illegal crime, this in return then helps to reduce the fear and
create better quality of life for all citizens.

An example/scenario I can link this too is the 2011 London Riots, which was a series of events that
took place for over a few days and consisted of murder, arson, robbery and vandalism and mainly
caused by a couple of firearms officers abusing their power towards a British black man, mark
Duggan.
Throughout each of the days the police, specifically the riot police were the main service that was
heavily involved in trying to prevent the situation from going any further.
They had the responsibility to protect the public from any danger that the rioters were causing,
protect people's property from being vandalised and robbed for example local stores.
And their powers were something they had full dominion over in regards to arresting anyone they
could get hold of that had full or partial participation in the riots and caused horrendous havoc.

Army
The army's roles and responsibilities are far more different in comparison to the police, their duties
include some of the following; protecting the nation and all of its dependent territories which is
classed as their number one role, prevent conflict, deal with all types of disasters and one of the
more brutal ones, fight the nations enemies.
The powers the army get are also a bit different to the police, their powers come from high up and
are given to the army personnel once or during the period of when they are deployed.

Much of the British army's responsibilities is protecting the UK against any threats, there are highly
trained soldiers ready to deploy at anytime and anywhere 24 hours a day, throughout 365 days of
the year.
Preventing conflict is another one of their responsibilities they must carry out and is done by being
engaged around the world working with partnered nations to help save the environment and any
future conflicts.
Dealing with any disasters that may occur on a worldwide scale, from natural disasters to
humanitarian assistance.
And fighting the nations enemies through war with commitment throughout thousands of soldiers
