A&P 2 Lab 5- Blood Types
Key Terms
● Antigen- protein, glycoprotein, or glycolipid. Genetically unique to
each individual except identical twins. Found on surface of red blood
cells and determine what blood type we have. Help the body
distinguish foreign matter that enters blood stream. If someone does
not have any antigens, they are type O.
● Antibody- bind to antigens present on red blood cells and mark
them for destruction. They are found in the blood plasma. They will
only attack if they detect foreign matter, they will not attack your own
red blood cells.
● Agglutinogen- an antigen that stimulates the production of an
agglutinin.
● Agglutinin- an antibody, lectin, or other substance that causes
agglutination.
● Alpha- Agglutinin- is a highly N-glycosylated protein of
approximately 250 kDa. ... By carboxy terminal shortening of the
alpha-agglutinin gene and by replacing three of its eight histidyl
residues by arginine, the active region of alpha-agglutinin for
interaction with alpha-agglutinin has been defined.
● Beta- Agglutinin-
● Agglutination- the process that occurs if an antigen is mixed with its
corresponding antibody called isoagglutinin. This term is commonly
used in blood grouping. ... The clumping of cells such as bacteria or red
blood cells in the presence of an antibody or complement.
● Hemoglobin- A protein inside red blood cells that carries oxygen
from the lungs to tissues and organs in the body and carries carbon
dioxide back to the lungs.
● RH Factor- an antigen occurring on the red blood cells of many
humans (around 85 percent) and some other primates. It is particularly
important as a cause of hemolytic disease of the newborn and of
incompatibility in blood transfusions.
