Role of Early years practitioners in keeping children safe and secure
The EYFS requires that “A practitioner must be designed to take lead responsibility for safeguarding
children in every setting”. Supervision is one of the keyways in which you can ensure that children
are kept safe. Babies and toddlers need very close supervision, but as children become older, they
might only need supervision within sight. Close supervision requires adults to be alongside children.
Babies and toddlers need this level of supervision most of the time. There is also an adult to child
ration was this the minimum number to help keep children safe. If they are 0-2yrs then the
recommended number is one adult to three children, if they are 2-3yrs then it is one adult to four
children and lastly if it is 4-8yrs then it is one adult to six children. Supervision within sight is where it
is safe for children to play within sights of the adult, being away from the adult helps the children as
it increases their independence, this supervision can be used when the children are 3yrs old and are
engaging in low-risk activities Children ages 4-8yrs will not need close supervision all the time but
they will need an adult to know where they are and what they are doing. When children are outside
playing in Sherwood Park for the infants when they are playing there is a maximum three teachers
outside supervising the children, but for the junior playground as they are older and they don’t need
much supervision there is only one teacher outside.
Another requirement of EYFS and a responsibility that all schools have is that they keep accurate
registers and up to date registers. The registers should be completed. By the teacher at the start of
each session. It will be recorded on the registers when there is a child absent. Registers are needed
to ensure a safe evacuation child in an emergency, or a fire also helps reassure parents that their
children are safe. At Sherwood Park the school starts at 8:55am and the register is used in all year
groups which is taken twice per day of the morning and afternoon sessions. The morning registration
closes at 9am. It is essential that children arriving and leaving school with parent and carer outside
the normal school hours are signed in us out from the office. The signing in/out register in the office
is used in the case of an emergency or a fire drill. 1
Children can learn to about staying safe by watching how the adults behave and hearing their
reasoning about why certain things keep us safe. The power of role modelling also means that you
need to think hard about what children see you do. Smoking is a good example as it is banned in
early years settings. As in my work placement smoking is not permitted anywhere on the school
premises. Through role modelling, you can influence your children’s development in positive ways.
It is important to observe individual children as this will help you to understand their stage of
development and how they play with objects. As well as using observation in relation to safety, you
should always be observant in case children are showing signs of being poorly or tires, their
behaviour can change, and they may become less aware of risks or less spatially aware. At Sherwood
Park carry out regular observation, formal and incidental, and involves the teacher and other adults
as appropriate. These observations are kept in class and individuals records as well as in maths and
literacy books. Each term the teacher uses the information gathered to update the child’s individual
attainment.2
