Week 1: Collaboration Café (Graded)
A novice educator expresses to the mentor that he is disappointed to be appointed to the
Evaluation Committee because the work never leads to any changes. What would be an
appropriate conversation between the mentor and novice educator?
Hello Class and Professor!
In terms of the conversation between the mentor and the novice educator, it is up to the mentor to push
the novice educator in the right direction in terms of their developing instructional skills by offering
constructive feedback, as well as opportunities for self-reflection. The mentor could take this
opportunity to explain to the novice educator that being a part of the evaluation committee could have
many pros. The novice educator could build relationships and start networking with the people on the
committee, leading to a better position within the organization. They could use their position in the
evaluation committee to present the issues that they as never changing to others on the committee and
actually be in a position to make those changes instead of just complaining about how nothing ever gets
done. This will give the novice educator an opportunity to lead and make a difference, a position that not
many novice educators find themselves in. The mentor should ask the novice educator why they feel the
way they do and have them think about why they feel that way. This will help them to understand that
event the smallest position can make the biggest difference if one works hard.
