A novice educator is talking with her mentor. During the conversation, the novice educator expresses
great pride in the fact that all learners passed the required course with a perfect score. How would the
mentor respond to this information with application of course evaluation techniques? This question
can be discussed from either the viewpoint of nurse professional development or an academic setting.



Hello Class and Professor!

As the nursing mentor, she should approach the novice educator and her students from a holistic point
of view. Holistic education is a “comprehensive approach to teaching where educators seek to address
the emotional, social, ethical, and academic needs of students” (“What is Holistic Education?,” 2020). So,
it is not just about the academics of the student, but what them a whole person. So, with a holistic
approach in mind, while high test scores can be one factor, we should know that that is far from the only
factor that will indicate a successful student and a successful future nurse. The fact that every student
received a high score is also interesting and could cause one to raise an eyebrow. This is not to say that
the educator is not an effective teacher, but statistically, there should be some students who did not do
so well. In terms of assignments like discussions and essays, the mentor could encourage the educator to
just take a look at their own evaluation methods just to ensure that they are using a critical and realistic
eye to allow the students constructive criticism to improve their own thinking, improving their own skills.
When it comes to quizzes and tests, the professor should ensure that the questions were sufficiently
challenging for the educational level of the students and that they promoted critical thinking in a variety
of hypothetical clinical situations. The mentor would need to reiterate that a reevaluation is not a poor
reflection on the educator, but instead, shows a motivation to consistently improve their own work to
teach their own students more effectively. Every educator should be open to change and evolution as no
student and no situation is ever going to be the same. This idea circles back to the idea of holistic
education. It is important not only for the students, but for the educator and their own personal
education, as well!
