Churchill and international Diplomacy
1939-1951
Churchill's view on Britain's world and
Imperial Role
Churchill believed that the 'English-speaking peoples', the Anglo Saxon world
community, including the USA and the dominations in the Empire, had
natural bonds and would stand together to defend democracy and freedom.

Dominations -

Churchill's View of Empire
 Though he agreed to the Atlantic Charter, he had no plans to extend
the democratic principles into the non-white parts of the Empire.
 The British colonies were expected to provide troops and also food and
raw materials for the war effort but received no steps towards a
greater self-government.
 Churchill resented the US concern about maintaining the British Empire
and restated his commitment to maintaining it.

Churchill and Britain's role after 1945
Churchill did his best to maintain British influence in the final years of the
war.
- He played a major role in wartime conferences which shaped the world
after the war.

Churchill continued to view Britain as being the centre of international affairs
and a key promoter of Western moral and democratic values.

He also promoted European Unity.
