I have recently started working as an IT development trainee at a car
dealership, that sells new cars from 6 sites all across Southern England. The
directors of this company are considering changing the car manufactures for
which they are dealing or simply to add new dealerships for different car
manufacturers. Implementing those changes will not be easy, as it is quite a
significant change for the business, they would like to know which car
manufacturers have been increasing the number of new vehicle registrations and
which have been declining over recent years. The directors have asked me to
investigate this and prepare a report for them. They have given me this data set
to work with https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-data-sets/all-vehicles-
veh01 this is an official government set with new car registrations for specified
years.
What have been asked to do?
In this assignment, I have been asked to prepare the raw data by simply
extracting only new registrations for cars and removing those manufactures that
only sell a very small number of cars. This will also involve a totalling up the
registration numbers by their make and combining the data for several years. I
have also been asked to analyse the data by applying routine and non-routine
statistical, probability and mathematical operations, similarly to the previous
assignment. I will need to create 2 reports, which will be a detailed version for
the directors and a more basic version which will be for branch sales managers. I
will be evaluating the outcomes of my analysis and produce accurate, valid, and
relevant judgement for the analysis of the dataset.
What should my report consist of?
My report must formulate a clear, specific question to identify what needs to be
known. The report should select methods to generate valid, accurate and
relevant information. My report must include appropriate and accurate
presentation of data, calculations, central measures, dispersion, and probability
functions.
The data set that I will be working on is a big data set. It is made of 45713
rows, which all contain data that must be reduced and some of it remove. The
first thing that I did in order to make my life a bit easier was to simply enable
the sort * filter function, which will allow me to sort rows from A – Z and other
functions that will make it easier. The way I did it was simply by selecting the
top row columns and from there using the
ribbon, there is a sort * filter dropdown button. when clicking this
, dropdown, we can see list of option, we are looking for the option that says
filter. When we enable this function you will see a dropdown
button appear on the column, this will allow for quick access and many other
functions to be executed in order to sort and reduce the amount of data we see.
. The next thing was to create a total row, with the
expression of =SUM, that will total all of the numbers in the selected row.
This makes it very easier for me to see how many cars
each manufacturer has produced for specific model car. I have also used
conditional formatting, to help me find cars that are under <500, this would help
me analyse the data as it will make it easier to find the numbers below <500
and help me eliminate those brands.
While I was calculating and adding up all of the car manufactures, I figured out a
way to make it much easier and shorten the amount of work required. The way I
did it is simply by using macros and SUM, alongside with referencing another
excel spreadsheet to transfer information over. I have also made use of IF
statements, which are helping me a lot decide, which manufacturer to remove.
