Introduction: I have recently joined a local software development company as a
junior programmer in the East Anglia region and the company that I work for is
considering moving into the mobile apps’ development side. Therefore, I have
been asked to evaluate a range of mobile apps.
YOUTUBE
YouTube is a fast-growing app that is used all over the world
by any gender and any age range. The intended users for
YouTube are male and female users that come from any range
age. The user’s needs preferences and characteristics have been met because
the app provides a lot of entertainment content and it is suitable for different
users such as there is YouTube for kids, there is YouTube music for artists and
people that generally use YouTube for music. Those are one of the things that
meets the user’s preferences and characteristics. YouTube has over 300 hours of
videos uploaded a minute which makes it having something for everyone. While
it is made for women and men, YouTube is male dominated as demographics
show. Males spend 44% more time on the site per month. Female users are more
into makeup and skin care and men are more into sports and gaming.
, THE PURPOSE OF THE APP AND FEATURES
The purpose of YouTube is made for designing and sharing videos. The purpose
of YouTube is for people to create an account that will allow them to upload
videos that anyone can watch. YouTube is an entertaining software which allows
people to watch millions of content and extract information from it. One of the
main purposes of YouTube is to bring people together and to allow people to find
content. There are many key benefits and features of YouTube such as being
able to create a 15 min video to share with friends and family. Some other
features and benefits might include:
YouTube edit facility that allows you to create a video or a movie with music and
other features such as effects and filters. You can restrict who have access and
views your videos on YouTube using the privacy option. You can save favourite
videos to your archive and search them later. You can like, comment, share
movies that you like. There are auto-generated subtitles available for most
videos. Another feature will be a search bar that allows you to search videos
quickly. The way that those features reflect the design is different than most
platforms, because you have a lot of features in one place the design must be
clean and tidy to make it easy to use and at the same time provide information.
For example, the feature where you can edit videos straight from the platform
without downloading a third-party editing software is made easy to understand
and use, because if it was made hard to use it will be really frustrating creating
videos and it will take a lot of time. This has reflected the features that the app
has because if the app were made for selling cars for example the features
would be much different such as selecting cars and displaying amounts. The way
it has reflected the features is that like, share and comment options have been
added to the design because we are talking about videos that people preview
and they would like to include their opinion about it and if the video is worth it or
not. Although this is a free app it has its implications such as having adverts that
are displayed as any other free platform. You could buy you tube premium which
will get rid of all the adverts.
This is the design and the screen for the YouTube video editor, as
I said above it is made very simply and easy to use. There are not
a lot of features added in order not to make it too complicated to
understand. This is example is straight forward,
you select a video, you have a timeframe below
and on the right side you can select different
effects.
, The app’s design is reflected by the features such as comments,
likes, and shares. They are all designed and put together to be
easily accessible for the user and not make the app too
complicated or having a lot of buttons.
This is the main screen that you see when you open the mobile
application on your phone. You can see that the first video is a
recommended video that is automatically created by the you
tube algorithm regarding what you have search before. On top
There are navigation buttons to check your notifications, search
video and access your profile. On the bottom they are other
navigation buttons such as to add a new video and to access
your library of songs/videos. This design is reflected by the
purpose of the app to make it more accessible and to fit its
purpose.
This is the screen when click to view a video. You can see there
are buttons underneath it that are like button, dislike, share etc.
Those buttons are reflected by the purpose of the app which is to
share video content and have been used in the design to
improve the engagement and usability. They are nicely
positioned and easy to use. There is another function that
Facebook has implemented that is show on this screen and it is a
subscribe button. It allows you to subscribe to your favourite
channels and receive a notification when they share a video. At
the bottom there is a link to a shop with the creator’s
merchandise that you can purchase which is categories as an
advert which will potentially lead to a payment that the creator is
going to receive.
This is the comment section/function of the app. The comment
function does reflect the design a lot because the platform’s
main goal is to display a lot of videos. The user must have the
option to express their opining and therefore this section has
been added to fulfil the user’s needs. You can delete/rename
comments and the creator can like your comment as well as
others can. There are replies available.
