JANNEMAN BAK ‘N KOEK


1. Janneman peeks (loer) sneakily (skelm) around (om) the corner (hoek),
where the adults (volwassenes) are sitting and talking in the dining
room (eetkamer). His mom and dad are there, as well as (asook) his
dad’s new wife, tannie Rina.
2. He can’t hear what they are saying, but he knows they are talking (praat)
about (oor) him. There was big trouble (moeilikheid) at school today
(vandag). Maybe (miskien) he shouldn’t (moes nie) have listened
(geluister) to that cheeky (hans) Pieter de Koker and swore (gevloek)
at his teacher (juffrou). But it was so nice to see Pieter’s face (gevreet)
when he actually (regtig) did it! Now Pieter will never say that he is gay
(moffie) again!
3. Mister Appelgryn is a deadly (dodelike) dangerous (gevaarlike)
principal (skoolhoof). You don’t mess (mors) with him, especially
(veral) not if you’re in grade 2. Mister’s moustache (snor) hopped
(gewip) up and down while (terwyl) he used big words like “suspension
(skorsing).”
4. Janneman had an uncontrollable (onbedaarlik) urge (lus) to laugh at
the comical (komieklike) little bouncing (wip) moustache (snorretjie).
He rubs (vryf) his left ear (linkeroor) with which Juffrou dragged
(gesleep) him to the office (kantoor). It still (nog steeds) feels warm,
sore (seer) and swollen (opgeswel).
5. Of course, mister Appelgryn phoned his mom and his mom, in turn,
phoned his dad. This is why (hoekom) they are now sitting and talking
at the table (tafel). Janneman feels in his stomach (maag), where the
rock is laying, that there is big trouble (moles).
6. His legs (bene) feel like Sunday’s red jelly when his dad calls (roep)

7. He doesn’t understand (verstaan) so well (so mooi) when the adults talk,
but from their talking he heard something (iets) about “cool down
(afkoel)” and staying (bly) with his dad for a while (tydjie). The rock
(klip) in his stomach (maag) suddenly (skielik) disappears (verdwyn).
8. Janneman doesn’t mind (gee nie om) going to stay (bly) with his dad.
His dad and tannie Rina take (neem) him out a lot to nice places and

, buys (koop) him MacDonald’s. His dad is ok, but he is a bit (bietjie)
scared (bang) of tannie Rina. She can get quite (nogals) strict/angry
(kwaai) when he draws (teken) Power Rangers on the wall (muur) or
if he forgets (vergeet) to brush (borsel) his teeth. She once even (selfs)
hit (slaan) him with a wooden spoon (houtlepel) when he said the “F”
word, but it was all ok, because a weekend (naweek) luckily (gelukkig)
goes by quickly (gou).

It’s not nice (lekker) at his dad’s anymore (nie meer nie). It’s been 10
days that he’s been here and they haven’t gone (gegaan) to
MacDonald’s once (een keer nie). Then tannie Rina also says he may
not (mag nie) watch wrestling (stoei) on TV and every morning (elke
oggend) she comes and checks if his room is neat (aan die kant). She
also asks stupid (simpel) questions like if he remembered (onthou) to
wash (was) his face (gesig). Why can’t she just (net) leave him alone
(uitlos)? He’s not a baby anymore (nie meer nie)!
9. Here by his dad, there also aren’t friends. He misses (verlang) Giepie
and Pieter and wonders if they still (nog) pull (trek) the girls’
(meisiekinders) hair. He cries in his pillow (kussing) and Janneman
decides (besluit) that one shouldn’t (moet nie) wait (wag) on adults
(grootmense) to fix (reg te maak) things, he will have to do something
himself …
10. Inspector Bester is on his way (op pad) to a farm (plaas) where
someone stabbed (gesteek) someone else with a knife (mes). It’s
almost (amper) time for change of shift (skofruiling) and he feels
slighty (effens) annoyed about this call out (uitroep) before he can clock
out (van diens af gaan). He sees a miserable (bedremmeld) looking
small boy by the turn off (afdraai) to the farm (plaas). He calls (roep)
over the radio to the base (basis).
11. Janneman can sommer immediately (dadelik) see that his dad is angry
(kwaad) when the police drop him off (aflaai) at home. His ears closed
up (toegeslaan) to everything his dad said. His dad sent (gestuur) him to
his room and now he is laying here and waiting (wag) …
12. Tannie Rina is at least (darem) not that bad (so erg). She brought
(gebring) him food to his room and later came and tucked him in
(toegemaak). His dad must be very (vreeslik) angry (kwaad) with him
because he didn’t even (eens) come to say good night (nag). If only
the road (pad) wasn’t so far and his feet (voete) weren’t so sore
(seer)!
