Er bestond angst voor communistische overheersing.
De samenwerking begon in 1951. Frankrijk West-Duitsland, Italië, Nederland,
België en Luxemburg richtten 1 organisatie op die ging toezien op de productie
van kool en staal. In 1957 richtten deze zes landen de EEG op. Afspraken over
handel, transport en landbouw.
Succes boeren had twee gevolgen:
Meer landen gingen meedoen aan de Europese samenwerking.
Europese landen wilden op steeds meer gebieden samenwerken, zoals milieu en
veiligheid.
Om die samenwerking mogelijk te maken werd in 1992 in Maastricht de EU
opgericht.
2002 werd de euro in veel EU-landen gevoerd. Voor deelname aan de Europese
samenwerking moet een land een parlementaire democratie zijn. Pas nadat
Spanje, Portugal en Griekenland democratisch werden mochten ze lid worden van
de EEG. Dat had twee voordelen:
Ten eerste konden arme landen profiteren van Europese subsidies en gunstige
handelsvoorwaarden. Ten tweede was zo de kans groter dat ze democratisch
bleven. In 1989 stortte het communisme in Europa in en werden de landen in
Oost-Europa democratisch. Ondertussen hadden Europese landen in het verdrag
van Schengen afspraken gemaakt over de afschaffing van de grenzen tussen de
landen.
De EU heeft voor veel Europeanen dus grote voordelen. Toch is niet iedereen
tevreden. Daarvoor zijn verschillende redenen:
