Introduction:
I have recently been recruited by Micro Games Dev to create a game for those aged 8-12. I will work
towards making this experience user friendly and visually appealing, whilst being as functional as
possible. I intend to make a game that can easily be learnt and played, to ensure the target audience
remains engaged.
I plan to develop a game that allows the user to navigate around a building or house and gather
items of importance. This game is planned to include multiple hazards, this way the children will be
able to develop reactive skills when playing the game, this way they develop other skills than just
playing the game.
Game Design Development:
To ensure the game being developed is following the correct development path, I will prepare
designs to show off what the game is intended to look like. This won’t exactly mirror the end
product; however, I plan to make a design that will provide visual insight into what the game is
intended to look like.
This game has specific user requirements for children who are aged from eight to twelve years old.
This includes the ones already listed in the specification, these being visually appealing, accessible to
those who aren’t exactly tech-literate, a timed event occurring in-game to provide the game with a
form of objective and finally varying levels of difficulty to keep the player engaged.
I plan to receive feedback on the designs I will mock-up, this way I can ensure the requirements of
the game are being met and also better the gaming experience for the intended user group. The
following section will include these design mock-ups that will provide a reference when developing
the game.

This design provided meets the requirements listed by the client, and if implemented would provide
a playable experience to the user. However, although my design hasn’t yet been reviewed, I can
identify a few design changes that would be better made to suit the game’s intentions and audience.
This design has been developed with visually differentiating aspects to make specific elements of the
design stand out. I have done this to provide some sort of engaging visuals for the children and this
should keep their attention on playing the game.
Although, I would like to mention that I’m currently unsure on whether the game being developed
will portray the design as being two dimensional or whether I will opt for a three-dimensional
approach. Either way, I can see the game being exciting, engaging and fun to play when the intended
audience gets a hands-on experience of the video game.
Game Design Review – Peer 1:
After carefully reviewing the game design art provided, I have a few features that I believe will spice
up the design and also better meet the requirements laid out in the assignment brief.
First off, the specification requested for a score feature to be implemented hasn’t been met, so if
this is implemented it’ll give more of an objective to the person playing the game. This will also
provide more visual objectives when gaming and keep the user’s attention on the game.
In addition to this, the game could have an incorporated life feature to monitor the game characters
health. This would further add an objective to the game and thus make it more engaging to play.
Game Design Review – Peer 2:
I have also reviewed the design option provided and have noticed a few inconsistencies in the
design. If these inconsistencies are edited, there will be potential to engage the user.
Firstly, I think there should be an inclusion of varying levels and times displayed in the design. This
could be visual icons, or another scene added to the game.
The specification also specifically requested for some form of indoor setting; the design drawn up is
pictured outside. Including an inside environment will brighten the scene and diversify the game,
making it far more engaging for the children.
Furthermore, there could also be more vibrant colours implemented into the game to make the
colours pop and stand out from the duller background. These kinds of colours will entice the users
and may make them more curious to explore the game’s scenery.
