The book is about a girl, Grace, who gets an accident with her horse Pilgrim, and with her
best friend Judith and Judith’s horse Gulliver. They got hit by a truck. Grace and Pilgrim
survive, Judith and Gilliver die. Grace is in a coma after the accident and her leg has to be
amputated. Pilgrim is also severely wounded. The vets, and everything in Annie’s
surroundings, including Grace, think it’s better to put Pilgrim down, but Annie, Grace’s
mother, didn't want them to. Annie hears about a horse whisperer, Tom Booker, who lives in
Montana. She moves to Montana with Grace and hopes the horse whisperer will recover
Pilgrim.
Characters
Grace Maclean
She withdraws herself after the accident and doesn’t want to have anything to do with
anyone. She can’t deal with the accident and the death of her best friend (Judith) yet and
she’s not understood by the people in her surroundings. But when she goes to Tom Booker
with her mother, she’s doing a lot better and she talks to her mother again.
Annie Maclean
Grace’s mother. After the accident Grace changed a lot and Annie doesn’t like that, cause
Grace rarely talks to Annie. She tries to act stronger than she actually is. She has a hard and
a soft side.
The hard side is caused by her work as an editor-in-chief of a magazine. She doesn’t like
people to say “no”.
In Montana Annie changes a lot; she becomes more sensitive and she learns to live with all
things that happened in life. She feels sorry to Grace because of the accident. Later it
becomes better.
Tom Booker
Silent and quiet. Sometimes it seems like the horses are his best friends. He knows
everything about horses and he uses that to recover Pilgrim. Mostly he doesn't feel
connected with people, but that’s different when he is with Annie.
Robert Meclean
Grace’s father.
Gulliver
Judith’s horse.
Frank Booker
