Elbow joint assessment
Goniometry – supination
Elbow at 90 degrees fixed into the side of the body.

Starting position – Central point of 3rd metacarpal

Stationary arm – Perpendicular down to floor

Movable arm – in line with pen

Turn pen away from you.

Normal range – 80-90 degrees

Trick movements – altering grip of pen, extra movement of
shoulder or elbow.

Goniometry – pronation.
Elbow at 90 degrees fixed into the side of the
body.

Starting position – Central point of 3rd
metacarpal

Stationary arm – Perpendicular down to floor

Movable arm – in line with pen

Turn pen towards you

Normal range – 80-90 degrees

Goniometry – flexion
Px is lying in supine, folded towel is placed underneath
shoulder, arm is extended.

Starting position – from lateral epicondyle

Stationary arm – coming up towards acromion process

Movable arm – coming down to radial styloid

With palm facing up to ceiling, bend elbow up as much as
possible

Normal range – up to 150 degrees
