Thoughts about the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy.
Transformation:
Thoughts about Nick’s contribution to the meeting.
I stopped by the kitchens during my lunch break the following day after Daisy and Gatsby’s visit to
Castle Rackrent to seek out Martha, a kitchen maid and one of my closest friends. The room was
steamy, and precipitation glossed over the small windows that lined the top of the kitchens. In one of
the far corners, I spotted Martha in her usual apron attire mopping the floor.
“Martha! Martha!’ I hissed out in an attempt to grab her attention. She must have heard me for she
looked up and without being noticed slipped into the quiet, isolated corridor to meet me.
“Emma, I’m working you can’t just-” She began to complain before I cut her off.
“The visitors from yesterday were Gatsby and Daisy Buchannan.” I stated, which caused Martha to
go silent and raise her eyebrows.
“Really? What on earth were the two of them doing here?” She asked, just as confused as I was.
“Well, I have my suspicions. It was so strange, when I brought in the tea and cakes for the three of
them the room seemed deathly quiet and there was this tense awkwardness between them. Shortly
after that Mr Carraway disappeared and left the two of them alone.” I explained in a hushed tone
behind my hand to ensure no one would overhear.
“But isn’t Mrs Buchannan Mr Carraway’s cousin? Surely, he invited her to speak with her. Why would
he leave so suddenly?” Martha Questioned once again.
“I’m not sure but it was all rather suspicious. Prior to his absence Mr Gatsby and him were acting so
strangely, they were both jittering so much that Mr Gatsby almost knocked the clock off the wall.” I
exclaimed as I shook my head in embarrassment. “But then as soon as Mr Carraway left, Mr Gatsby
seemed to become... Well, a new person. I heard his conversation with Mrs Buchannan from the
corridor and I hate to say it but… I think Mrs Buchannan is possibly having an affair.” I suggested
cautiously.
“What! What did they say?” Martha asked, her tone raised so high that I had to shush her before
speaking.“It was so improper of them both. To say these things in another man’s house for all to
hear. They talked about the time they spent together before the war and ‘Jay’ as Mrs Buchannan
called him said that he had missed her and wanted to provide for her should she let him. As soon as
he said that Mrs Buchannan began to cry from happiness it seemed and the two stared at each other
with such glee you would have thought they were married already” I murmured close to Martha’s
ear to avoid word getting around.
“Oh my!” Martha Exclaimed loudly. “To think such a pair would do such a thing.”
