Abstract
Various jurisdictional pharmaceutical sectors across the globe are determined to internally
and externally improve their supply chain schemes in order to mitigate the potential
challenges and risks that would lead to shortage of pharmaceutical products in their markets.
Such determinations are also aimed at supporting various aspects of supply chain (such as the
logistic aspect especially in terms of infrastructures) in order to create and develop enhancive
environment that enables seamless pharmaceutical supply chain operations. Qatar is among
the jurisdictions across the globe that can be exemplified to have such determination towards
its pharmaceutical sector. Over the recent years, Qatar has been fronted with black swan
events (the blockade and recently Covid-19 pandemic) which were extremely disruptive to
the supply chain operations in different sectors (including the pharmaceutical sector)
especially at the onset of these events. While the State of Qatar has made significant steps
towards overcoming the supply chain shortcomings (including in the pharmaceutical sector)
resulting from these events, there are certain significant supply chain difficulties that the
sector still struggles with. These challenges include Counterfeit Medicine, Finding Multiple
Suppliers, and Loss of integrity on cold chain products. This paper discusses these challenges
and provides potential solutions that can be employed to address them. The paper is sectioned
into two parts namely Part A, and B. Part A discusses the supply chain challenges faced by
Qatar’s pharmaceutical sector while part B investigates the root cause of the challenges and
offer potential solutions to each challenge.
