Learning Aim, A: Investigate training and development in a selected business
Learning Aim, B: Examine the planning and delivery of training programmes in a selected business
Explain why a selected business trains it’s employees:
Introduction to training and development:
Training refers to when you are trying to learn about a specific role and increasing your
knowledge/understanding of it as well as gaining the skills needed in order to be productive and
perform the job accurately. Training is important for a business-like Tesco because by having the
correct skills and requirements for the job role, it can make the employees have more devotion and
commitment to the organisation by being a useful asset. In addition, by having the correct training
for Tesco, the organisation will be deemed to be successful and increase their performance by
increasing their employee morale, staying loyal with the business and dedicate themselves for
working for the organisation. There are different types of training used by different organisations for
example, Tesco uses line manager training, digital skills and apprenticeships which are the types of
training they do. As Tesco’s aim is to expand and diversify the requirements of people in the
business on the right place at the right time, they make sure their colleagues are equipped with the
right skills to succeed in the future and create opportunities for colleagues to reskills in areas.
Overall, by having training employees will be more satisfied within Tesco and increase the reputation
for the firm they are working for which can develop the employer brand and make the firm a prime
consideration of a prosperous organisation. In contrast, development refers to when an employee
gets more advanced as well as has more knowledge/skill to perform a complicated job according to
the requirements. For example, in Tesco, they have something called “Learning at Tesco” which
helps employees build up their opportunities and gain the right skills to progress their performance
in their career of choice or progress to another career of choice. This helps colleagues as they have a
lot to access which includes face to face workshops, articles and more. Development is important
for Tesco as they want to expand as a business and improve their awareness as a firm so they can
get recognised for their work and commitment as a business. In addition, development will help
employees grow within the business for example go up the ranks and become more better with their
training which can improve their loyalty with the firm as well as their attitude and personality.
Reasons for Training:
Strategic: One of the main reasons why you train is because of the term “strategic”. Strategic in
business terms refers to when they implement a strategy in place for employees to train better. In
addition, a strategy is important for Tesco because it helps guide them to a right direction and
identify what the strengths and weaknesses are. For example, Tesco’s strategy is to grow in the UK
and be recognised by having high valued brands. By having a good strategy in place, it will make sure
Tesco employees are working towards their goal and are seen as productive because they have a
good strategy in place for them. One of the reasons to be strategic is that it can decrease employee
turnover. This is because by implementing a good strategy for employees to follow then they will
understand the vision of the firm they are working for therefore not leaving the business. Another
reason why it will decrease staff turnover is that if you set good objectives for each of your
employee, it will result them becoming more productive and producing high quality work for Tesco
because they know what objectives they need to meet. Another reason to be strategic is it can
increase profit. This is because if Tesco creates a training strategy, employees will be seen as more
motivated and engaged with their training which tells you they will make more profit for the
business because they will work hard.
