AQA A Level Psychology
Gender - Androgyny and Bem’s Sex Role Inventory
Notes
Paper Reference 7182/3

ANDROGYNY:
● This involves a person having both masculine and feminine characteristics.
● For example, someone who is competitive and aggressive at work but is also
nurturing and caring at home.
● This can occur when an individual perceives the world without gender stereotypes
although some believe that androgyny is a result of reinforcement.

BEM SEX ROLE INVENTORY (BSRI):
● Sandra Bem developed a method for measuring androgyny, suggested androgynous
people are more psychologically healthy.
● By having both masculine and feminine characteristics a person is better adapted to
responding to a range of situations.
● BSRI is a self report method designed to measure masculinity and femininity.
● It consists of 60 items on a 7-point scale.
● ⅓ relates to feminine characteristics, ⅓ relates to mascline behaviours and 1/ relates
to gender neutral behaviours.
● The 4 categories of people are:
○ Masculine - high masculinity, low femininity
○ Feminine - low masculinity, high femininity
○ Androgynous - high masculinity, high femininity
○ Undifferentiated - low masculinity, low femininity

EVALUATION:
● SERBIN:
○ Researched correlation between androgyny and mental well being
○ Found a positive correlation
● BEM (1974):
○ Used the BSRI to measure androgyny, finding 34% of males and 27% of
females to be androgynous, suggests a sizeable population is androgynous
rather than masculine or feminine.
● Has good test-retest reliability:
○ Follow up studies with smaller samples
○ Revealed similar scores when tested a month later
● ADAM AND SHERER (1985):
○ Argued that there are more masculine are better adjusted as these are more
highly valued in western society
○ Suggests BSRI didn’t take into account social and cultural context
