In ‘Autumn’ by Alan Bold, Autumn is presented as a destructive season with the
personification of “grabbing the green stuff”. This suggests that Autumn is stealing all of the
leaves from the world. In particular, the lexical choice of the adjective “green” has
connotations of life and vibrancy which is significant because it suggests that Autumn is
taking away all of the joy and happiness in the world by replacing it with dull yet still natural
colours. From this, we can infer that the writer is not fond of the season Autumn which in turn
makes us think about the consequences it has on our lives. Furthermore, Autumn steals the
“green” “like an experienced robber”, a simile which further reinforces the idea of Autumn
making our lives more depressing by taking the colours that make it vibrant and joyous.
Alternatively, the fact that Autumn is “experienced” suggests that it has been doing this for
longer than even humans have been around, therefore, it makes it natural and feel as
though it is necessary to prepare for winter. As a reader, I feel conflicted as to whether
Autumn is good for us as people or not due to the theft and betrayal that is portrayed in the
poem. The writer may have done this to show how the effects of Autumn can have a drastic
effect on the visuals and look of the environment, yet it seems like this is happening for a
