, Introduction


The use of both qualitative and quantitative methods in the same study is known as mixed

methods research. Although researchers have been combining qualitative and quantitative data

for many years, mixed methods research as we know it today did not emerge until the 1980s. In

recent years, mixed methods research has grown in popularity, establishing itself as a distinct

research methodology with a name and identity (Denscombe, 2008), particularly in fields such as

education, health sciences, psychology, and sociology.


Example of a mixed method study


A mixed method study was conducted to investigate how social wellbeing factors such as

loneliness and social support (lack thereof) impacts the mental health of older adults. The one

year long longitudinal mixed method study investigated the effects of implementing physical and

social activities on the social well-being of community members with a mean age of 70. The

study combined a quantitative survey assessing loneliness and social support (n = 28; three time-

points, analysed using linear mixed models) and a qualitative focus group study (n = 11, analysed

using thematic analysis) of members from Life Activities Clubs Victoria, Australia


There was a significant decrease in loneliness (p = 0.023) and a trend toward increased

social support (p = 0.056) in the first year after moving into the community. The findings were

confirmed by the focus group, which suggested that the development of social support could take

longer than a year. According to focus groups, group membership also provided important

opportunities for developing new and diverse social connections through shared interests and

experiences. These connections were critical in improving members' social well-being, especially
