P6 - Describe the procedures that an organization should follow when dismissing an employee.
Disciplinary training record
Scenario: A police officer arrives at work wearing the wrong uniform; his uniform is not ironed, his boots are not
polished, he has a scruffy beard and messy hair, and he is wearing a civilian hoodie instead of a police jacket. He has been
advised unofficially by the duty Sargent that he needs to become organized because if they are examined or obtain a visit
from an inspector, he could suffer significant consequences, therefore he needs to start dressing appropriately and tidily to
prevent getting into trouble.
Stage 0 An informal warning would be given as the officer once
Informal warning messes up the workplace and may be asked to properly
think through his actions before making an arrest. This
procedure was taken to inform the officer about his
actions to ensure he does not continue.
Stage 1 This stage entails noting that the problem has been
Verbal warning officially reported and that a first verbal warning has been
issued. This is where a superior will have a conversion
about not wearing uniform, determine if there are any
obstacles preventing the officer from wearing the uniform,
implement strategies, and issue a warning that if the
problem is not resolved, the officer will be escalated to
stage 2, which is a first written warning. A sergeant or
inspector could deliver a verbal warning to a police officer
who was not dressed properly. There is no official time
limit to a verbal warning in the police, however it would
be around 3 months for the officer without correct uniform
so that they have enough time to correct their uniform.
Stage 2 If there has been no change since the initial verbal
1st written warning warning, the officer will be given a written warning within
three months to remedy the problem; if there is no
progress or the issue is not resolved, the officer will be
escalated to stage three. A written warning will inform the
officer who is not wearing his uniform that they are the
subject of an investigation, and they must be informed
unless it would jeopardies the outcome of another inquiry.
This warning will also inform the officer that they have
the option of seeking counsel or legal assistance from a
police body or staff association. Under section 10 of the
police conduct act the police officers' supervisors would
have the option to suspend the officer whilst the
investigation continues but, in this case, because uniform
is not a major crime or causing damage to any individuals
this would not happen and instead, they would continue
with their duties.
Stage 3 The second written warning provides the officer with six
2nd Written warning months to rectify the problem; this is a reasonable amount
of time, and if the situation does not improve after six
months, step four, which is a final warning, will be
applied. The officer and the inspectors will agree on an
action management plan that will outline plans for the
officer to correct their uniform and provide guidance and
