HIEU 201 CHAPTER 14 QUIZ
1.
With respect to religiosity and women

Both mysticism and Protestantism allowed women a way to express
independence in religious matters

Answer:
I would say that you are asked to comment on why or whether women have
religiosity or strong religious beliefs. I would argue that most religions delegate
women to have a submissive role. Most of history's most influential religious
leaders were men. Most religious institutions are exclusive to men. Yet, statistics
show that women are more faithful to religion.

2.
Luther's propositions for reform of Christianity include the idea that

There was no difference between the clergy and the laity in matters of faith

Answer:

Luther's proposition was that the clergy and the ordinary Christians were no
different when it came to matters that dealt with faith.
This was a way to break down the wall between the clergy and the ordinary
people. According to Luther all Christians belong to the spiritual estate and
that there is nothing that differentiates the clergy and the other ordinary
people since no boundaries exists between them and God.

The German peasants' revolt of 1524-1526

Was attacked by Luther, who encouraged the nobility to crush the revolt
mercilessly

The revolt of the German peasants of 1524-1526

At the beginning of the 16th century, the situation of the peasantry in various areas
of Central Europe, present-day Territories of Austria, Switzerland and southern,
central and western Germany, was totally distressing. In recent years, feudal lords
had begun to increase the system of oppression and the amount and prices that the
inhabitants of their lands had to pay, in exchange for protection. In this way, the
peasants felt more and more rigorously the damages of bad harvests, droughts or
wars.

The power that the emperor could exercise over his domains was diminishing, with
the figures and superiority of the princes and various nobles constantly growing
over their jurisdictions. However, a fact of great historical relevance would serve
as a trigger for the demands and needs of the peasantry was the Protestant
Reformation. The religious movement carried out by Martin Luther in Germany
had important immediate repercussions throughout the continent, garnering the
attention of several spokesmen, such as Thomas Müntzer and Ulrico Zuinglio.

From that moment, the Protestants began to proclaim that men could reach God,
without having to depend on the Church, which, among other things, rejected the
payment of the tithe. Likewise, the peasantry, and the sectors that supported their
claims, had conceived of the Reformation as a fact of character, especially social,
by which the consolidation of a society with the possibility of accessing a relative
equality of rights was sought.

Until then, Europe had witnessed different peasant uprisings, which had occurred
due to various regional problems. But, all of them were severely suffocated by the
ruling entities. Furthermore, in none of these did the protesters see their problems
resolved.
