3. Describe standardization
• The extent to which standard procedures govern the organizatiosn function and activities
rather than using individual judgement. Ex: mission and vision statements, polciies, roles
and functions that are defined.




4. Describe specialization and the possible benefit
• The division or differentiation of work by occupation or function.
• Standardization of worker skills coordinates works indirectly by stipulating the kind of
training or education required to perform the work. In nursing, the standardization of

, worker skills might occur if specific degrees or certifications are required for certain roles
such as nurse practitioners or critical care nurses.
• Standardization of work processes coordinates work by prespecifying or programming
content before the work is undertaken, such as nurses being required to use clinical
protocols or evidence-based best practice guidelines in practice.
• Standardization of work outputs coordinates work through the specification of the results,
product, or performance desired or expected and includes the specification of outcome
targets such as reduction of nosocomial infection rates.
• Standardization of communication methods coordinates work by providing a uniform
structure for information delivery and flow in order to facilitate exchange among those
involved in common work processes. In nursing, this might be achieved through
electronic health records and relational databases with alerts that allow nurses and other
care providers to have direct and simultaneous access to client information in a consistent
format.



5. Compare/contrast tall vs. flat organizational shapes
• Tall: pyramid-shaped; multiple management layers.

▪ Layers of skill to deal with varying degrees of work complexity
