Poverty, closer than you could imagine
When thinking of the United States of America one thinks about all the wealth and
glamour that it brings with it. Unfortunately, this is not how it always works in reality. The
United States of America is one of the richest countries in the world, but certainly not all
citizens enjoy this wealth. There are approximately 580 thousand citizens in the United
States of America who lack one of the most important needs in their lives, which is
shelter. Most of the homeless population are concentrated in big cities, such as Los
Angeles and New York, where many end up living in limited spaces called skid rows.
Everyone has probably seen a homeless person in their life. We sometimes buy them
coffee or bring a sandwich. But if we venture into one of the skid rows, we will see
thousands of homeless people.
, The tragedy is right here, in front of our eyes, but the scope is hidden. We should
challenge ourselves to think beyond our daily experience and apart from lobbying the
politicians, implement change on a personal level. In this article, we’ll discuss causes
and potential solutions to the tragedy of homelessness.
Why is this relevant?
Everyone thinks that becoming homeless is a horrifying prospect. No one wants to ruin
their day by pondering on the “what if” and “why”. But the homeless population is not
some distant concept that we happen to remember only when it has a direct impact on
our lives. It does exist outside of those times when we happen to walk into the Skid Row
in Los Angeles, or decide to take a look into a sewage tunnel in Las Vegas. Many
people learned it the hard way during the COVID-19 pandemic. Chronic homelessness
increased by 15 percent between 2019 and 2020.
The truth is, apart from common human decency, we cannot predict who will be next.
