For my English speaking exam, I had to write a presentation about the subject, service at the airport. It's about the services you'll come across at Schiphol on airside, landside and the role of the flight attendant at both sides. I received an 8.7 for this.
Good morning and welcome to my presentation. My name is Joëlle Kagenaar and I am going to talk
about service on the ground.
There are so many passengers that walk through Schiphol every year. Many different kinds of people
are walking around every day, every minute. Everyone needs the perfect service, but what services
are there actually at Schiphol? And are there services missing?
Today I am going to talk about service on the ground at Schiphol. You can divide Schiphol into 2
sections: landside and airside. To start with I will describe all the services that you will come across
on landside. Then I’ll talk about all the services on airside. After that I’ll talk about the role of the
flight attendants in the services. And finally, I give my opinion and conclusion about my presentation.
I will try to answer all of your questions after the presentation.
Services on landside
What do you think of when you hear service on the airport? Is it the shops, the catering industry, the
check-in counters or the toilets? There are so many services you can think of, even if you just think of
the entire process that a passenger goes through from walking into Schiphol Plaza to departing on a
plane. I'll take you to the services you'll come across. First I am going to talk about the services on
landside. Landside is the part of the airport that is accessible to everyone. If you travel with public
transport, then you will arrive at Schiphol Plaza. All routes are clearly marked where you need to go.
You can buy everything here, there are many catering establishments, a supermarket, clothing
stores, there is a service point that can almost fix everything for you, like repair your shoes, make you
a new key for your house or even wash your clothes but also some important services. You can find
an Airport Medical service, the Royal Military Police and the company Axxicom. The company
Axxicom provides service to passengers with disabilities, who speak a foreign language, or who travel
alone. You can find all these services on Schiphol Plaza.
Furthermore about the services on the departure hall. That is upstairs at Schiphol Plaza. You can only
entry this hall if you are a passenger or a flight attendant. In this area you can find all the check-in
counters. You'll definitely come across some friendly flight attendants who are happy to help you if
you have any questions. You can also find a lot of services in departure hall. There are large screens
where you can find all flight information. There is a service to seal your bags for your trip. They wrap
your luggage in plastic so no one can open it and put for example some illegal items in it. This is
called seal & go. Also on this level of the airport there is a place for the Royal Military Police, here
you can file a request for an emergency passport. You can travel with this document one time and
you can only file a request once in your life. Before you can enter airside you will have to go through
security. You have to put all your electronic devices in a bin and take off your jacket and shoes. Then
you’ll have to walk thru a gate that check if you don’t have any metal objects on you. If you pass this
test then you are on airside.
Services on airside.
Now I am going to talk about services on airside. Along with all the shops that you can find, you can
also find some other services. There is a pharmacy, a first aid post, a medical center and you can get
vaccinated. But also a lot of places where you can relax. There are places with large, massive chairs
and massage chairs. If you want to close your eyes for a few hours between flights or just relax in
