Concept Map: InfertilityMedical Definition: The inability to conceive after having unprotected sex for 1 year.
Clinical Manifestations:
Causes: Delaying pregnancy until later in life, endometriosis, antidepressants,
anorexia , chemotherapy, tubal adhesions, vaginal/cervical infections, STD, obesity,
irregular menstrual cycles, excess of androgens, estrogen and cortisol. Drug and
substance use.
Collaborative Care:
Reproductive Endocrinologists: manage plan of care for couple. Prescribe fertility tests
and treatments.
Embryologists: create viable embryos for IVF.
Gynecologist: prescribe fertility medications.
Nursing Diagnosis:
Ineffective coping related inability to conceive for over a year as evidence by verbal
statements from patient stating that they are stressed.
Knowledge deficient related to reproduction, contraception and selfcare.
Anxiety related to the inability to conceive
Nursing Interventions:
Be nonjudgmental in listening to patients and be open to conversations. Patients are
sharing very sensitive and private information, being closed off will not allow the patients
to open up.
Perform thorough assessment on couple to get an understanding on what has been tried
and what could possibly be contributing factors to infertility.
Provide resources to patient to help them financially and or emotionally.
Patient Education:
Educate the couple on the menstrual cycles and how to detect when ovulation is
occurring.
Advise the couple that they should have intercourse atleast 2-3 times a weeks and the day
before and day of ovulation.
Provide emotional support to the couple. Infertility can be stressful to go through.
