Week 6 Discussion
Learning about research ethics and biomedical research’s history gave me a better understanding
to why such strict federal regulations are implemented to protect humans participating in research.
The examples of history and the failures that lead to all safety measures demonstrates that the
regulations mandated today to prevent unethical practices are absolutely necessary.

Participants enroll in research trails for many reasons. Some might hope for improvement of
diseases, or perhaps some might hope to contribute to knowledge that will help others in the future.
Whatever the reason, participants certainly have the right to feel safe and well informed about the
research being carried out. After taking the biomedical research course, I do believe that the rights
of human subjects are adequately protected. The Belmont report established ethical principles and
guidelines for the protection of human research subjects in the United States. The implementation
of institutional review boards and the regulations based on the ethical principles outlined in the
Belmont report subjects that the human subjects are indeed well protected. According to JAMA
International Medicine, the Belmont report summarizes discussions among the National
Commission for the protection of human subject, biomedical and behavioral research and has three
core principles that include: respect for persons, beneficence, and justice. According to The
Oschsner Journal, Institutional review boards (IRBs) have the federal mandated responsibility to
review research involving human subjects and ethical guidelines are appropriately met. (White,
2020).

When designing a study, careful consideration should be given to informed consent, the
assessment of risks and benefits, and selection of participants. (Ross,2015). In addition to
protection, privacy and confidentiality is a big part of the safety measures put in place to protect
human subject for research. Office of Research and Integrity subjects that there is currently
seventeen federal agencies that have regulations governing the conduct of research involving
human subjects. Some of these agencies include the Department of Health and Human Services
(DHHS), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Science Foundation, and the
Department of Defense, Education, Justice, and Veterans Affairs. Because of the inadequacy from
the past, human participating in research can rest assure that safety for those that choose to
participate in research has a great importance. unethical practices are not tolerated
