Crime and punishment

Good and evil:

Good = morally excellent, righteous and pious – evil = immoral and wicked (something done with
bad intentions) – some say criminals are evil and law abiders are good – some say humans are bad
by nature

- Christianity: misuse of free will causes evil – or caused by Satan tempting humans – sinning
is going against the role and wishes of God
- Muslims: humans are tempted by the Devil (Iblis) – humans fail to show self-discipline and
give in – caused by mixture of evil and human weakness

Causing suffering may be necessary: to punish someone or to protect others or if it will have good
outcome

Causes of crime:

Poverty and upbringing: commit crime because they see that as the only way to survive – no money
or job – cannot provide for family or themselves – brought up in environment where crime is normal

Mental illnesses: psychological issues, so don’t know what’s right and wrong – no guilt or may enjoy
hurting others – influenced by addiction e.g., drugs/ alcohol – under the influence of drugs/alcohol

Greed and hate: emotions may influence them – greed for what others have (steal) – hate someone
so may wish to hurt them (assault)

Opposition to an unjust law: crimes done in protests e.g., suffragettes (laws against women voting)

Views on criminals: often people don’t dislike criminals but the dislike the crimes they have
committed – want to help + support them to change (reformation)

Different types of crime:

Laws: in place to protect people and make society a safer place – millions of crimes committed per
year in the UK – majority by under 25 – males more likely to do it than females – all have different
punishments depending on the laws and government

Crimes against a person: which directly cause harm to someone – include crimes carried out due to
prejudice, racism and religion – e.g., murder of Stephen Lawrence due to his skin colour in London –
‘there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave no free, male nor female for all are one in Jesus Christ’

Crimes against property: damage or take someone’s property – not allowed in Christianity (10
commandments: do not steal) – not allowed by Muslims either, punish thief’s harshly (‘as for the
thief, male or female, cut off their hand’)

Crimes against the state: actions that potentially put society in danger or impact its smooth running
– terrorism or selling state secrets

Views against these crimes: longer negative impact of victims = worst crimes – crimes hurting the
most victims may be seen as the worst – Muslims are completely against hate crimes as Prophet
Muhammad PBUH taught ‘we are all as equal as the teeth on a comb’
