truth: based on what it says in holy books
Big Bang: scientific explanation – 20bill years ago there was huge explosion – created the universe –
universe is expanding so going back in time it would go back to single point – based on evidence
Evolution: scientific explanation of how humans began – environment changes so species adapted
and those that did survived – natural selection – humans evolved from extinct Neanderthals and
homo erectus – evolved without the need of God
Literal views: Christians/Jews/Muslims believe in the accounts of creation in their holy books –
genesis, 7 days of creation – Adam and Eve were the first 2 humans
Symbolic: take the accounts in holy books symbolically not literally – universe was created over
billions of years but what if 1 ‘God Day’ is billions of years so the 6 days God created the universe in
is spread over billions of years
Values of the universe:
Why the world is important: God created the universe so its special + respected – genesis God said
the universe he had created was ‘good’ – all life is scared + special and belong to God – creation
shows God to be all-powerful/loving – world seen as a beauty
Stewardship: Humans created last therefore the pinnacle of creation – God created everything
humans need before creating us – responsibility to look after Gods creation – ‘The Lord God took
man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and take care of it’
Dominion: humans are the pinnacle of creation so we rule over everything else – (Bible) ‘let us make
mankind in our image...so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky’
Muslim views: God created the universe so its special – humans made Khalifas (stewards) – ‘world is
green and beautiful, and Allah has appointed you his stewards over it’ – believe in the Ummah
(‘brotherhood’), so we must look after the environment for the future generations
Secular: world is beautiful so should be taken care of – also not ours to ruin – it was here before us
and will be here long after us so we cant be selfish and ruin it for our selves – maintain it for future
generations to enjoy
Use and abuse of the environment:
Pollution: too much of something that is toxic causing damage to the environment – usually result of
human actions – air pollution causes acid rain – water pollution from farms and factories releasing
waste + fertilisers into rivers – litter pollution and noise pollution (airports) – pollution causes global
warming and climate change
Global warming + climate change: human actions caused the earths temp to rise – between 1.4- and
5.8-degrees Celsius rise before 2100 – caused by greenhouse gases released when burning fossil
fuels – causes ice caps to melt – seas rise + lands flood – need to us sustainable energy
