Sex:

Legal age of consent in the UK is 16 - heterosexual (between opposite genders) – homosexual
(between same genders) – sexual feelings start puberty its natural biology

- Catholic Christian – should only take place in marriage – purpose to produce new life – ‘go
forth and multiply’
- Liberal Christians - should take place in loving + stable relationship – could be married or
likely to get married – purpose: create new life or strengthen relationship
- Muslim – should take place in a marriage between man and woman – for pleasure or create
new life – ‘O you who believe! Do not forbid the good things which Allah has permitted you
- Secular – take place between 2 who are able to fully consent – for fun/strengthen
relationship/create new life

Marriage:

Legal union between 2 people – 2014 same sex marriage allowed – generally marry to show love to
another and raise children

- Catholic Christian – marriage is a sacrament – gift from God – man and woman join together
and create new life – ‘a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife
and they shall become one flesh’
- Liberal Christian – between a man + woman joined by god – not a sacrament – some
denominations allow same-sex marriage – to provide a stable + secure environment for
family life
- Muslim – contract between a man + up to 4 women – create a stable family environment +
have sex without sinning – ‘marry women of your choice, two. Or three, or four; but if ye
fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly then marry only one’ – ‘O you young men!
Whoever is able to marry should marry, for that will help him to lower his gaze and guard his
modesty’
- Secular – one man and woman, two men or two women – commit lifelong to another – to
express love + offer security to raise a family – some instead cohabit or don’t marry

Families:

Nuclear family = mother + father + child(ren) – 25% children now live with lone parents – more
reconstituted families in the U.K – extended families where multiple generations (i.e. grandparents)
live together

- Catholic – man+ woman married and raise children to love one another commanded by God
– divorce + reconstituted families not allowed – raise children to be good Christians –
children should honour their parents – ‘honour your mother and father’
- Liberal Christians – promote nuclear families – some denominations allow same-sex
marriage – love another commanded by god – divorce + reconstituted families not allowed –
raise children to be good Christians – children should honour + respect your parents –
‘honour your mother and father’
- Muslim – promote nuclear/extended families – provide stable environment for children –
Prophet Muhammad PBUH had children so Muslims should too – raise children as good
Muslims – look after older relatives – ‘honour your children and prefect their manners’
