The fault in our stars

, Title
The title of the book is: ‘The fault in our stars’.

In a written play by Shakespeare about Julius Caesar, says nobleman Cassius to Brutus, 'The
fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, / But in ourselves, that we are underlings.' This is what
inspired John Green to choose this title.

The relation of the title to the story is that Hazel and Augustus, who are teenagers, have
cancer. Both have not a long life to live. Gus dies in the end of the book. That is not his fault
but that is ‘the fault in our stars’.

The title fits the book because in the book this is how Hazel and Gus (Gus is short for
Augustus) see it. It’s not their fault that they are sick. Because they think that way, I think the
title fits the book. Also, the title makes you think why John picked this title. It reminds me of
Hazel. She thinks about all sorts of things.

Writer
The writer of the book is John Green. He was born in Indianapolis on the 24 th of August in
1977. He studied English and religion. He worked in a children’s hospital in Ohio. He saw
many kids die. Here he decided he wanted to write books about people who have to learn
how to live with losing someone they love. He spent two months in Amsterdam to finish his
book ‘The fault in our stars’.

Publishing date
The book was published in 2012. The book is significant for its time because back in the days
people didn’t have phones and there weren’t as much medical options for people who had
cancer. In this book there is lots of treatments, phone use and so on. That’s why it’s
significant for its time.

From another point of view. This book can be significant for all times because it’s about
death and about love. These two things are significant for all times. Death, sickness, love and
losing someone is not just something of the present.

Genre
The fault in our stars is a novel because it’s a fictional story about two teens who deal with
life, love and pain (cancer). In the book we get to know Hazel and what she thinks and feels.
What her life looks like and the choices she makes. That’s why it’s a novel.

Theme
The main theme of the book is the meaning of life and death. The book is about
teenagers/young adults with cancer. That’s why the meaning of life and death is important
to them. What comes after death. Not just for the teens who are dying but also for their
parents. Augustus thinks that to have a good life you need to accomplish something. He
wants to be reminded by people after his death. He also believes there is something after
death.
